You may have heard of Gener8, likely through Dragon’s Den, but have no idea what happened after that. What happened? Is it still around? And, most importantly, what is it?
I’m not going to keep you waiting, so here’s the quick answer:
Gener8 is a company that helps people earn money from their online activity and data. They have over 500,000 users and offer a mobile app, plus Chrome and Safari extensions.
But if you want a bit more detail, or perhaps how it works, read on!
What is it?
Gener8 has a lot of products, so it can be a little confusing at times. Let’s break it down:
- They have an app. This app allows you to earn from your Google data, clean your inbox up a bit, earn from e-receipts, invite friends (and earn a bit), and more. It also allows you to access the marketplace, which is where you can cash in what you’ve earned.
- They have Chrome and Safari extensions. I’ve only used the Chrome one (I don’t have Safari), but I imagine they do essentially the same thing. They allow you to earn from ads you watch and your data, or alternatively it can protect your privacy and block ads. Both modes also block trackers (cookies, but describing them for what they actually are), but privacy mode is more of a ruthless blocker.
- Marketplace. The marketplace is where you can cash in your “points”, which you can imagine as the Gener8 currency. In the marketplace, you can get gift cards, deals on things, bid for stuff and donate to charity. Sadly, though, they still do not have a PayPal option currently available – though they are planning to add one (which I am really looking forward to).
- Gener8 Browser. This is essentially just a Chrome browser with the extensions installed, as far as I can tell.
- Gener8 Genie. Have you heard of Honey – that extension that finds coupon codes? It’s not the only extension that does that. Gener8 Genie is essentially the same thing. It will allow you to find coupon codes for most of the sites that you buy things on.
- Gener8 Sentinel. This is a cool tool that allows you to find out if your email address has been leaked online. However, it only pulls data from another tool, so it’s not that reliable.
As you can see, Gener8 has quite a few options available to its users. While this is good, it can make it difficult to navigate the landscape.
How much can I earn with Gener8?
Gener8 will not make you rich. If you’re a kid or teen (which this site is made for – people like me!), it may feel like a lot, but it isn’t. First I’ll tell you what Gener8 promise you – then I’ll tell you what has happened in my experience.
First of all – what does Gener8 promise you? Well, Gener8 says that its users can earn 5-10 points per day if they’re relatively active. And, roughly speaking, 10 points is equal to £1 – so you could earn £30 a month! Yay!
But wait! My experience says something a little different. I am, I would say, a pretty active user of the internet, using Gener8, and I would say that 5 points a day is usually out of reach. Most days I don’t even make 1 point. On the days where I upload my Google data I can expect around 10 points, but even if I spend my entire day at the computer I couldn’t expect to keep this up consistently.
I would say that you could expect an average daily payout of a couple of points, which I only say if you consider yourself an active user. Although this does add up over time, it does take an awfully long amount of it! In total, I have around 600 points at the time of writing, which is worth around £60.
Points are not a reliable equivalent to money though. On some gift cards, it exactly matches 10 points = £1, though there are now only two or three of them. On others, it is as low as 20 points = £1. However, you need to keep in mind that there are only a few of these available each week – to almost a million users. So you are unlikely to get anything even if you’re waiting for five minutes before the countdown reaches zero.
But things start getting stupid when you look at the auctions. There is usually at least one auction item available – but since the one item is available to a million users it quickly becomes bid up to thousands of points (which most people don’t have).
At what I am currently on, a £15 Deliveroo card got bid up to 1790 points. That’s well over 100 points to a single pound! And that’s over 10 times worse than what Gener8 quoted us, and all the while we’re making less than they told us as well!
So, yeah, the situation of getting paid isn’t exactly perfect for Gener8 – but it is still a decent way to make a bit of passive income. You’re essentially just making money from stuff that you already do.
Does Gener8 protect my data?
Now that I’ve told you about the potential earnings – and uploading your data to a company that you have only heard of for possibly a few minutes – does it protect your privacy? After all, if you’re literally telling them – willingly – what you’ve done on Google, etc., you’d hope that your data wouldn’t come back to bite you, right? And also, how does the money actually come in at all?
Well, you’ll be glad to hear that Gener8 does indeed protect your data by anonymising it. Anonymising your data means that your personal details are taken out of it. This means that nobody can take your details to hack you, find you or anything shady and malicious.
But how does this data actually make money? Well, as far as I know (and I don’t know that much, so you shouldn’t take me as a super reliable source for this), Gener8 sells your data for purposes such as market research.
For example, if Ford wanted to know how many cars they should produce, they could buy this data to see how many Gener8 users have searched on Google about buying a new car. This can help them cut waste and save money – meaning they make more profit. You can do the same example in many different contexts, so it applies in a lot of places.
If you want to join Gener8, then I have got you covered as well – when you sign up, you receive 10 free points if you use this link!
Thank you for reading this post and I hope that you have a good day! Bye!
